Could anything do that?

I don't typically read stories like this, so deciding what to say in this review has been a little difficult. In the end, I have to say that reading this wasn't necessarily enjoyable, but it was still worth it. The writing itself is of high quality, both imaginative and vivid, and you really come to understand the nature of the main character very well. This, however, is somewhat disturbing.Alex is very unlikeable. He has within him more than a little bit of Camus' character from "The Stranger", Meursault. He is spoiled, callous, care-free, amoral, and debaucherous. His own life means nothing to him, and neither does anyone else's. He is essentially soulless. There are reasons for this, which I won't explain so as not to spoil the story. I will say that he eventually undergoes a significant transformation, but the trigger for that change comes with its own set of problems.
I think there is probably a little bit of Alex in everyone, to some extent. This makes the story very thought-provoking; it is discomforting to see aspects of yourself in such an unlikeable character. Also, if you've ever fantasized about being rich and immortal... Well, this story may well change your opinion about the desirability of that particular combination of characteristics.
If you can handle such a dark, disturbing story with such an unlikeable main character, then "Deathprog 23" is definitely worth reading.
